God bless the good old town!<br />May she never shame her noble ancestry!<br />She was first in Revolution, was first in '61,<br />And from all dishonor we will keep her free!<br /><br />For those of us who grew up in Marblehead the song has special meaning. It brings back memories of a carefree childhood when we were free to roam the fields, look for tadpoles and other enticing creatures in the many ponds, capture crabs at Brown's Island and swim at Grace Oliver's.<br /></span>Marblehead Mopheadshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467896785198075088noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8645080797754864626.post-83587873924473016222007-10-07T10:50:00.000-07:002008-11-14T18:34:27.739-08:00Marblehead's colorful history<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgweDnj1Qa_E9dGegIe4EQFGHEDCVYEvihQtvYPgEnsyQYsRqINcKmjHN104AAmMSe2rRnTg5QNN4b_xJ-_bJ7FfNr0CD4Kfw7PzZeD93A8In8p8bXW61lftxCaMlIeaZgkRz4b0pdzIoo/s1600-h/TuckersWharf.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgweDnj1Qa_E9dGegIe4EQFGHEDCVYEvihQtvYPgEnsyQYsRqINcKmjHN104AAmMSe2rRnTg5QNN4b_xJ-_bJ7FfNr0CD4Kfw7PzZeD93A8In8p8bXW61lftxCaMlIeaZgkRz4b0pdzIoo/s320/TuckersWharf.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118655181088124066" border="0" /></a><br /> <div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size:100%;">As told by Samuel Roads, Jr. in <a href="http://www.usigs.org/library/books/ma/Marblehead1880/Marblehead000.html">THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS of<span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span>MARBLEHEAD - 1880</a><br /><br />Tucker's Wharf show here<br /></span></div><p style="font-family: times new roman;" align="center"> </p>Marblehead Mopheadshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467896785198075088noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8645080797754864626.post-20282531625807154872007-10-07T09:31:00.000-07:002008-11-14T18:34:27.849-08:00Marblehead & Witchcraft<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG-U7Bg4oJIBQ5CRBcG6Arz6Mz3ESt-97IEGYFG5tf_dKjIZJ4qbwFXMXlerAy7OgiC-cwvusNN_lUEvRuvkGPVn4UIhH7ou224g5NztIVSQCLUYMi4D1Jg1RZK7sruJtcxNYj2RBLgEM/s1600-h/Marblehead-Mammy-Redd-sm.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG-U7Bg4oJIBQ5CRBcG6Arz6Mz3ESt-97IEGYFG5tf_dKjIZJ4qbwFXMXlerAy7OgiC-cwvusNN_lUEvRuvkGPVn4UIhH7ou224g5NztIVSQCLUYMi4D1Jg1RZK7sruJtcxNYj2RBLgEM/s200/Marblehead-Mammy-Redd-sm.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118634127158439058" border="0" /></a>In 1692 the belief in spirits and witchcraft was universal. Wilmot Redd and her husband, Samuel Redd, a fisherman of Marblehead, lived beside the pond known to us as Redd's. The women of the town went to the pond to wash their clothes and exchange the news of the day while the children played near by.<br /><br />Mrs. Redd, said to have the power to cast spells, was accused of witchcraft. Her accusers became hysterical when questioned by the Salem authorities. Asked if she thought her accusers were bewitched, she said, "I can not tell. My opinion is that they are in a sad condition." At the height of the witch trials in Salem, Mrs. Redd was found guilty of witchcraft and was hanged September 22, 1692.<br /><br />Mrs. Redd gave what is now Redd's Pond to the Citizens of the Town of Marblehead for their use.<br /><br />Marblehead Witchcraft mugs are available at the Marblehead Historic Commission store at Abbot Hall.Marblehead Mopheadshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467896785198075088noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8645080797754864626.post-14332244298189553282007-09-15T17:28:00.001-07:002008-11-14T18:34:28.061-08:00Marblehead Mopheads Gift Card<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghgUcPvWKmRirwqpjhA7EPKol6h4LCcHWuOmmqe18_F89zklrZcbeULEbSwmA_m0KhoSbK2BCWggjhopSZGlNkqwTRPi4sOcBCrle6sVnf3AlzANf9M17O7_Oh6utLb0ok5ZkyjOtT2Gg/s1600-h/Marblehead-Mopheads.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghgUcPvWKmRirwqpjhA7EPKol6h4LCcHWuOmmqe18_F89zklrZcbeULEbSwmA_m0KhoSbK2BCWggjhopSZGlNkqwTRPi4sOcBCrle6sVnf3AlzANf9M17O7_Oh6utLb0ok5ZkyjOtT2Gg/s400/Marblehead-Mopheads.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110593026388656370" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Available at<br /></span>The Marblehead Historical Commission Gift Shop!</span><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br />Ready to mail!
